The paranasal sinuses are hollow spaces within the bones of the face (frontal, maxillary, etc.). When infected or inflamed (sinusitis), they fill with fluid or mucus. On X-rays, a healthy sinus (filled with air) appears dark, whereas one occupied by mucus will appear opaque or with fluid levels.
