Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) uses light waves to take cross-sectional images (optical slices) of the retina and optic nerve. It works similarly to an ultrasound, but uses light instead of sound, which provides much higher resolution. It allows for measuring the thickness of the retinal layers down to the millimeter, being key for diagnosing macular edema or glaucoma damage.
